Concordia Part 1 Project 2021 Charlotte WardEmily WalkerAmy ThompsonMartha Eustace University of Bath | UK Concordia intertwines music and architecture, creating a shared experience for all users, as a positive counteraction to the disparity evident in the UN. Music has complex structure and harmonies, which is reflected in the transition between spaces of varying atmospheres and scales throughout the building. A timber diagrid gives freedom to the floor plan, enabling a playful scheme with low embodied carbon and flexibility for future use. A historical exhibition journey, from the origins of music to present day, flows through and around the archive, linking public and private realms. Visitors are invited to learn, both about the historic artefacts, and the work of librarians and archivists who inhabit the building. Encased in brass, the archive is present throughout the visitor’s journey. This core of knowledge carries the public libraries and is central to the librarian’s offices. A lightweight veil wraps the building, creating intrigue from the street. Perforated brass panels, with patterns abstracted from musical notation, allow daylight and shading control to be tailored to individual volumes.
