CUMBERNAULD: 2059 Part 2 Project 2006 Stuart FalconerGunnar Groves-RainesSteven OrrAlexandra Grönberg University of Strathclyde | UK Cumbernauld New Town, once voted The Worlds Best New Town by the Association of American Architects, is now consistently voted the worst town in Scotland. 'Cumbernauld: 2059' presented as an interactive installation, set 53 years in the future, places the town at the heart of a new transport and land management system, designed to reduce Scotland’s resource consumption and increase its resource production. The lives of 10 characters are presented through a series of small films exploring their daily lives within Cumbernauld in 2059. Improving transport efficiency, linking the nations facilities and integrating new ecological strategies are all explored. Stuart FalconerGunnar Groves-RainesSteven OrrAlexandra Grönberg Students were asked to contribute to the current debate on the long term future of Cumbernauld. Through a critical analysis of the social, economic, environmental and spatial conditions prevalent within Cumbernauld the students have responded with a 53 year plan for the town centre. Using the original 'New Town' promotional film produced in 1973 as a starting point for their analysis the students have created a visual narrative which places Cumbernauld within the context of a European transport network and imagines the impact of this transport and distribution hub on a new model for the town centre and mega structure.
