The Cliftonville Centre for Collective Learning and Performance is located at the Cliftonville Lido, Margate. In one of the most deprived areas in the UK, the Centre will be a place for healing social divides through the sharing of knowledge and understanding. The existing Lido and the nineteenth-century Baths are restored, retaining the historic fabric, and converted into teaching facilities for music and dance together with a library and numerous social spaces.

The lido pool floods during storm surge, and in 100 years time high tides filling it will be a regular occurrence. The raised concert hall is positioned to gauge the rising sea levels, so that the increasingly frequent flooding will serve both as a warning and for inspiration, motivating visitors to utilise knowledge against climate change.

The architecture expressively articulates the topography, using it to create outdoor spaces under one single roof. Here, local residents can come together and curate communal events. By connecting to Margate’s existing routes, it also invites the town to take part in this nexus of knowledge and collaborative activity. The project aims to raise the local status and public wellbeing of Cliftonville, bringing knowledge and understanding to all generations.
