The COVID-19 pandemic shifted film viewing from cinemas to personal devices, affecting the immersive experience filmmakers intended. Streaming services like Netflix gained popularity, but home viewing lacks emotional impact. The Edinburgh Film Institute (EFI) proposal prioritizes audience experience, located strategically in an urban area. The EFI design draws inspiration from architects like Bjarke Ingels Group, aiming for a harmonious blend of function and form. The building comprises three sections: Make (film studios), Watch (innovative auditorium), and Share (versatile foyer). Throughout the design process, the close proximity between the river and the high street was carefully considered. Various options were explored to connect the two areas, eventually, a passageway leading from the high street through the foyer and to the walkway was chosen. This design encourages pedestrians to stop and appreciate the impressive space, possibly staying for a coffee or movie. The foyer also boasts cantilevered protruding windows that provide intimate seating areas overlooking the river, reminiscent of Malcom Fraser’s intervention in the listed building on site. Altogether, these elements create a one-of-a-kind destination in Stockbridge that invites the public to experience cinema in a new way, engaging in the process of filmmaking rather than just watching from home.
