Lavachik: Resilience for Housing

Floods contain an indescribable force that can take over an entire city, bringing it to a standstill. Global warming has resulted in rapidly rising sea levels and prevention of flooding is not possible but adapting to living with it is. Barrier solutions will soon be obsolete and thus, are not sustainable solutions to build higher defences against water. The solution seems to be living on and adapting to water.

The idea that architecture can transverse these thresholds between land and water; allowing human beings to survive within their existing dwelling is explored through a case example of a slum upgradation in Mumbai. Slums lack adequate shelter and basic infrastructure; flooding could directly affect their health and safety. It causes displacements affecting their living conditions exacerbating their existing vulnerabilities. Providing them with affordable housing; improving quality of live while ensuring their safety and security during both flood and non-flood situations.
The project aims at creating a resilient housing development embodying the intrinsic resilience to hardships and the ability to bounce back of slum dwellers. It allows the community to survive, with the ability to float and maintain habitation during flood situations; withstanding the threat posed by rising water levels.
