Making Public Room

Part 2 Project 2007
Yerin Kang
Korea National University of Arts | South Korea
My agenda is to deal and design the urban scale space as like an architectural room. The site is the old military administration center in downtown. To compose the several material (existing materials and new materials) and control the program and pathway, I designed the public room as a cultural park.

Starting with the question of the meaning of program in architecture the students were asked to transform a former military administration center in downtown Seoul into a public cultural facility. Yerin Kang in a wonderful way succeeded to compose space through program, to find critical criteria to compose architectural elements and to generate relationships without following ready-made definitions. The simplicity of the design is the result of a tremendous effort to reduce to the architectural ‘maximum’, to create space through its absolute essence.
