The Post-Terrenean Mega Subtropolis, Beirut Martyrs’ Square, Lebanon Part 2 Project 2020 Ghadir Mustapha Beirut Arab University - Debbieh campus | Lebanon We build to remember; This memorial is minimal and uncompromising in its message: that to forget the Lebanese Revolutions is to imperil civilization. The proposed project is all about unveiling the superimposed layers of Lebanese history. The researcher has approached the Park of Civilizations as an opportunity to unearth the complexity of the Lebanese Uprising story, which seen as a series of layers that have become hidden by time. It to reveal these layers not through a static symbol commemorating the past, but through an organic living monument that evolves over time, capable of both affecting and being affected by its users. The Park is about walking in that space and you get strange physical sensations such as undulation, tilting, leaning, and you feel perplexity, isolation, disorientation; you never know where you are. It is not about not understanding the meaning. There is no iconic representation in Beirut. The design integrates Youth Centre, Memorial and Park into a multifaceted holistic sensorial and emotive journey. Through a careful sequencing of highly immersive spaces that intentionally juxtapose moments of solitary engagement with moments of collective gathering, the design envelops the visitor in the physical, intellectual and emotional experience of the successive clashes’ trauma.
