In the ceremonies of public execution, the people’s presence was required for the performance. It was being seen that gave punishment power, but spectacle receded in favour of hidden justice. This restorative urban prison reverses the reputation of a historic site of public execution in Dorchester, challenges the stigma the public hold against offenders by bringing prison back into the urban consciousness, and facilitates contact between incarcerated and free communities.
