The Empiricism of Art

Empiricism refers to the theory that all knowledge is based on experience derived from all the senses. For the Birkenhead school of art, this uses the experience of creating art through a visual representation of the building’s façade and interiors in a widely traditional Georgian context. The building internally and externally is inspired by the painting “Among the Lines” which is a piece that is not constrained by the laws of constructivist and abstract paintings, but rather pushes the boundaries of both styles and allows for its own expression whilst admiring its origins.

The external façade steps out of the laws of Georgian architecture whilst still reminiscing its past using pigmented concrete precast panels, like the surrounding stone textures. This is also achieved through the alignment of each floor and cantilevered walls/floors to the surrounding context making sure they were respected and celebrated without compromising the individualism the Birkenhead school of art explores.

Two interviews were conducted in two different schools of art where students shared their positive and negative experience of the space and building, they used to create art. This determined the positioning of every requested room and space to make the client happy – the students.
