The Atlas Gallery and Edmund de Waal Studio Part 1 Project 2020 Jasmin Yeo University of Sheffield | UK Situated in Atlas, Sheffield, at a crossroads between the city, industry, and community, ‘The Atlas Gallery and Edmund de Waal Studio’ encapsulates a story of two parallels centred around the idea of ‘homecoming’.The Edmund de Waal studio transports the artist back to the city that housed his first pottery studio, whilst the Atlas Gallery seeks to engage those usually excluded from art discourse by returning The Ruskin Collection to the industrial community. John Ruskin initially created this collection to inspire and empower industrial workers, and by pairing this with the works of Edmund de Waal the gallery becomes dense and layered, prompting visitors to discover and dream.The massing is a play on the classic industrial typology, whilst the programme concentrates the social and gallery aspects to the south of the site, with a vibrant approach to urban design that includes a dynamic sculpture playground. The playground is inspired by the sculptures of the late Tony Smith and it aims to engage the children of Atlas in the art world on a more haptic level.
