Architectural Psychosis: An asylum for corrupt politicians Part 1 Project 2014 Christian Scriba University of Pretoria | South Africa The project is a physical manifestation of a meta-physical state of alienation playing on the double meaning embedded in the term asylum, referring to confinement and refuge. The corrupt official is captured as an alien within the reality of deviance and opposition. He seeks asylum, and escape from this reality into a subjective self constructed reality. The project explores the punitive consequences of corruption relating to an architectural brief that is defined as a psychosis sphere, a place originating from the corrupter’s own psychosis. It speculates on the spatial and ritual possibilities relating to forms of penance, repentance and forgiveness. The translation into form suggest a monumental edifice as an expression of the extent of corruption and its consequences. It represents an Asylum of the Absurd as a theatre designed to exercise and exorcise our repressed obsessions and exclaim the fragile state of reality: A theatre of psychosis designed through psychosis itself.
