Advertsing Agency Offices and Skate Park, Salford

The scheme, office and public space is an abstraction of the Salford landscape. The locality is dominated by surface level car parks; the public space creates an image of this condition and may indeed be used for overspill car parking. The office is generated from a car-parking bay module; each space accommodates two workstations. Circulation between car-parking bays translates to a different quality of space; entrance hall or photocopy store. Non-uniform space projects beyond the south façade in cantilevered steel units.

The north billboard façade exploits its exposed position in order to generate maximum advertising revenue.

Enquiry 1: Exposure Value – Does spatial exposure equate to value? The local area was mapped according to perceived levels of exposure. Exposure breaches the site boundary.
Enquiry 1: Exposure Value – Can a building be shaped to exploit this potential value beyond the site boundary?
Enquiry 2: Site Landscape – The locality is dominated by surface level car parks. The site itself exists currently as surface level car parking space.
Enquiry 3: SK8 Landscape – The skatepark was generated in response to a brief set by local skateboarders.
Enquiry 3: SK8 Landscape –The skatepark was later amalgamated with Salford Advertising Agency to form part of the external landscaping.
Site – The car park organisation was rationalised to provide car park, building footprint and public thoroughfare / overspill parking.
Plan – The plan is generated from the site landscape. Each car-parking bay provides two workstations. Non-uniform space projects beyond the south façade in cantilevered steel units.
Section
Elevation – For maximum value the Chapel Street façade is clad in billboards to exploit its exposed quality.
Detail – Detailing is conventional masonry construction for the spine and standard manufactured components for the cantilever units.
Structure – Anomalies in the programme project beyond the façade in steel cantilever units clad according to internal organisation; the boardroom in marble, the meeting rooms in profiled aluminium.
