The Wapping dock freight tunnel is emblematic of past industry however, city regeneration puts forward the argument for reinstating this line. Our thesis was to stit ch forgotten infrastructure back to the city above, connecting the docks back to the rail network creating a terminus rather than a logistical point. The project address many of the city’s current and future problems in regards to integrated transport, r edevelopment and services infrastructure which, in itself, is crucial to Liverpool’s future regeneration. Miles PearsonRebecca UnderwoodBruce Doran The project focuses on the revival of the disused Wapping Tunnel, an important component of Liverpool’s Victorian railway infrastructure. It ingeniously uses the tunnel to make a series of connections – both physical and infrastructural – to make a new experience of Liverpool possible. One ‘terminal’ connection successfully brings the city ‘closer’ to River Mersey, while the other adds an additional strand to weaving Liverpool back into the national network of cities. The intermediate nodes complement each other: one stitches the ‘surface city’ back to the hidden infrastructure, the other reveals the exploded grandeur of overlapping underground infrastructural provisions.
