Untitled Part 1 Project 2003 Felix LaufferSadie Alsop De Montfort University | UK Architecture can mediate between performance and use. Different but yet related fields in an urban environment create a continuous space of transformation. The same principle can be applied to architectural design in order to integrate various uses and create a continuous and fluid entity. For this project the building had to occupy five different uses: staff facilities, studios, technical facilities, art-cinemas and the cinema foyer. Each of this elements should function as individuals, but should yet form a fluid entity with its related and overlapping functions. In order to provide this fluid entity, intermediate zones are introduced, expressed by the open public spaces. Felix LaufferSadie Alsop The approach to architecture of Felix Lauffer is a product of the ability to assimilate ideas related to some of the more adventurous contemporary design images allied to innovations in computer programming. This leads to an assuredness in his conceptual approach that leads to slick images of design proposals at times investigative, and at times seductive in the way the essence of a design proposal revealed. Felix has already made study tours of the work of contemporaries such as the Austrian designers Baumschlager & Eberle and in contrast has some knowledge of recent work of the Californian Sci-Arch people. His final design at DeMontfort brought together aspects of the formal tectonic quality of the Austrians with the, at times, ethereal transparency of Eric Moss. To an extent architecture may appear as a formal and spatial game to Felix in which indeterminacy in form is resolved by accepting a continuity of computer programme. Tutor(s)
