Transitional Center Celebrating the Completion of Human Life Cycle Part 2 Project 2022 Chee Yan Hwang University of Malaya | Malaysia In multi-cultural background of Malaysia, Chinese cemeteries serves as significant representation of local Chinese. Kwong Tung Cemetery, an urban cemetery located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur is one of the important historical site in Malaysia. Despite its strategic location and continuous reformation effort, the social relevance value remains low. This architectural proposal aims to address the local Chinese’s perception of life & death through architectural proposal with the acknowledgement of both preservation and development needs while complimenting the overall healing environment of the cemetery for both personal grieving and public well-being needs. The main design idea of the proposal is ‘Metamorphosis’, a biological process involving conspicuous and abrupt change in one's body structure. The idea is translated through transformation of architectural form and function of spaces revolving around the water feature at the center. In additional, human recomposition method is introduced as an alternative method for body disposition. The idea allow graceful return to the nature, parallel to traditional Chinese philosophy of ‘Tian Ren He Yi’ (????). This proposal seek to be a pioneer in driving the idea of ‘green bereavement’ while sustaining social relevance value of the cemetery as part of the urban green lung. Chee Yan Hwang Tutor(s)
