Lakeside Capture Part 2 Project 2023 Tom Wood Lancaster University | UK This project explores the introduction of a sustainable fuel production facility to a tourism hotspot within a sensitive rural context. The main aim was to facilitate the transition away from fossil fuel use by producing carbon neutral electro fuels (efuels) for existing marine transportation on Lake Windermere. The fuel will be made on site using carbon dioxide captured directly from the air and hydrogen from the water in the lake obtained using electrolysis. Over 10,000 boats are registered on Lake Windermere and most of the larger ferries are powered by a diesel engine which would be compatible with synthetic efuels without need for adaptation. More modern transportation such as electric vehicles are more ecologically sustainable, but also more expensive and inaccessible for the less wealthy, this project seeks to extend the lifespan of existing boats, running them carbon neutrally. The design draws upon Lake District vernacular building forms and material qualities but also High-tech architecture in the expression of the industrial machinery. The design retains the sites existing use as an intersection between the heritage railway line and a lake cruise destination with café and aquarium attractions, but also offers self-guided facility tours with an elevated walkway, similar to many modern distillery visitor experiences.
