Steel Structures for Inhabiting the Hills of Valparaiso, Chile

The project is about a housing complex consisting of 100 homes for people living in informal housing arrangement, which is located in the V region of Chile, at the Cerro Alegre area in Valparaíso.

The main objective of this proposal is the search for a new way of inhabiting the slope and avoiding the excessive intervention of the hill when placing the project on it, this through the use of steel as a structural material, raising the dwelling and releasing it from the floor.

Due to the location of the project, the architectural proposal is a staggered building that adapts itself to the shape and slope of the hill, achieving this by overlapping houses and the breakdown of the complex in vertical circulation cores, generating balconies and terraces allowing also the light permeability to the main floor of the complex.

The project consists of 2 areas, one private - the housing complex - and the other public - a park-. The complex organization is born from the objective of maintaining relations between the inhabitants of the 4 camps that will be located in the project proposed. For this, the complex has 3 levels of grouping; individual homes, neighborhoods, made up of 16 homes that share common spaces and finally the complex, taking by parameter for its order the accessibility needs and space required by the inhabitants. The complex is ordered based on the common areas, which correspond to 3 different scales: shared courtyards for accessing the dwellings (up to 3 dwellings), common courtyards for 8 dwellings and the space corresponding to the access stairs.

The basis module for the proposed project, it's composed of 5 housing units. The structure of this module it's a framing steel, braced by a rigid diaphragm corresponding to collaborative slabs that make mezzanines and terraces.
