Combines the qualities of the site with a regional operating network. Established by the communities it becomes a tool of city’s own corporate identity.

Proposal to transform far-away commercial parks into nearby city areas.

It negotiates the needs of enterprise, the city and it’s inhabitants.

6. NEW VORSTADT

newVORSTADT has no specific status, no concrete form. It is the sum of all suburban activities and interventions.



The project Gefühl von Vorstadt,a trip to the suburbia of Innsbruck has been developed during a series of workshops in the Region of Tyrol, Austria. As a small city of 180.000 inhabitants Innsbruck has, due to colossal economic growth, become a vast landscape of industries, farmland, housing, extreme touristic development and historical structures. Asked for its image or means of identification one finds rather contrary than unanimous answers.

As a result to this most inhabitants have mainly contributed to their very individual home and lifestyle. This has found its image in the tyrolian suburbia (i.e. every part of the city that is not situated in the Altstadt), a place between tourism and privacy, history and shameless sell-out.

By approaching these structures with openess and curiosity the two students have found hints for descreet and unloaded activities, responding to actual planning laws and the interests of all sides, developers, consumers and inhabitants. They have developed a convincing, almost soft but very efficient concept to deal with the interests different parties in the area would have. By doing so a regional soul has been enforced which inspired further work on the topic and started discussion on the spot. Above all, when made public it was immediately understood by those people the project wanted to reach: a local mass.
