Wasteland: “Design for Waste, Design from Waste”

In July 2015, series of protests aroused in Beirut in response to the government's failure to dispose waste, following the capitals over-stuffed landfill closure. The aim of this thesis is to introduce alternative management plan to treat waste near its source, and make the process transparent to people to raise their awareness to their role in turning waste into resources through workshops and exhibitions for recycled artwork and products.

03- The relevant site: forgotten land with a closed dump mountain since 1997 at Beirut’s waterfront in Bourj Hammoud undeveloped district. Unlike other waterfronts, life is absent from this land because of the smell the dump mountain still endures.
04- Dump mountain rehabilitation process by methane extraction balloons and growing on top of the mountain to bring people to this mountain that is to remain a reminder that waste can produce beauty.
05- Massing arrangement; waste journey in the wasteland: disposal, sorting, energy production for site, composting, growing from compost, recycled materials and artwork production for exhibiting and selling.
06- Section arrangement: bringing people to site by creating jobs in workshops and fields for people in the district, and creating a healthy environment and waterfront for visitors to replace the dump and bring people from whole city eventually
07- General arrangement: designing and growing from waste. Wasteland planning aims to distinguish all different activities in the wasteland. The floor patterns, furniture, and insulation will compromise recycled materials produced in the workshops.
08- Design concept: waste-like colorful buildings and fields emerging through site. The buildings start from the roads leading to the site then rise above the ground with a green roof continuation towards the sea through the fields
