Three-Dimensional Mosaic: The Grid as an Architecture Coordinator

Part 2 Project 2021

The project seeks to decipher the tools that composition can provide through its projection as a grid. The grid as a compositional tool that derives from the analysis of art, especially through mosaics and modern art, which work as a method of organization for smaller systems that are part of a bigger picture. Furthermore, the project analyzes this type of plan-making in terms of place and architectural systems, which all together can conform to a project that can be better understood as an architectural mosaic. The grid as the main tool for the unification of a multi-programmatic, architectural device that, together with the concept of open-plan postulated by Le Corbusier, as well as the correlation between both, give rise to all the systems that make up a project: structure, circulation, and enclosure. A coordination of small autonomous systems in pursuit of a larger, articulated and coordinated one.

This method could potentially be used on a larger scale, in terms of urban fabrics, to decentralize cities with patches of land that have been forgotten due to an exponential demographic increase. Such is the case of the city of Arica, in Northern Chile, in which the project is proposed to be.
