Charging the Void: Hooks and Nooks

Part 1 Project 2019

Cambridge is one of the fastest growing cities today. In the quest for growth, its characteristic ‘hooks and nooks’ dissolve into generic fringes. Whilst not romanticising a pre-modern condition, how could we design new places that do not confront, but coexist with the existing intricate urban fabric?

The proposal aims at reconstructing these ‘endangered’ topographies of the intimate and linking back to the history of the site. Drawing inspiration from Bachelard and Perec, the architectural journey is subtly evoked by a railing, a step or a chair - set in a cut-out, recess or corner. This seeks to question our ‘anaesthesia’ to the Ordinary and rediscover its potential to hook our minds.
