Residential District in Shanghai Part 2 Project 2007 Marcin Pilsniak Cracow University of Technology | Poland A mass influx of migrants, overcrowding, poverty and social segregation are making many of the developing world’s metropolises unlivable. It is crucial to address these problems at both global and local scales.Through the implementation of a design approach similar to that of the natural world, as well as the use of technologies available today or in the near future, a system of principles, rules and consequences was designed. By implementing this system within a given environment, vital urban issues are addressed, and a dynamic and responsive stem cell-like tissue germinates, repairing and regenerating the urban environment. Inspired by his visit to China, the student decided to explore the problem of overcrowded Chinese cities. On the basis of his in-depth studies into the subject matter, he ventured to create a computer-generated model of the mechanisms of urban growth patterns. His developing design proposal lead toward the creation of a futuristic urban settlement worked out to the scale of architectural detail.The complexity of the undertaken task, logic, reasoning, commitment, interesting and unconventional results as well as a rich graphic presentation have been the primary reasons for selecting this project as a valuable entry for the competition.
