Faversham Creek Student Housing

Part 1 Project 2007

The site in historical Faversham is full of exciting imagery – boat building and making gunpowder. Conceptual painting is a method I use to express the feelings generated by site visits, client requirements and research. It helps create a stimulus for my design and allows the freedom to explore forms.

For the design of the Student Accommodation, the defunct sailing barges inspired the use of dynamic triangular forms as created by their masts and rigging. Church towers and narrow slivers of creek views informed sight lines which intersected the hilltop site, above the creek, setting out the position of the proposed Student Accommodation. Repetitive volumetric and panellised modules were then placed adhering to these predefined lines to create a visually exciting plan.
