Foyer is an organisation providing accommodation and educational facilities to disadvantaged young people.

From well organised form, distinct colours and contrasting materials, the dynamics of the site are captured to give a design that offers security and protection both physically and metaphorically. The concept for my Foyer design, situated in a developing area of Leeds city centre, is to protect the inhabitants from the harsh environment of the immediate surroundings and the dangers of society. I have achieved this by layering accommodation in front of services and circulation zones; shielding the residential units which are private with an open south facing aspect.

Deborah’s intelligence, energy, commitment and industry enabled her to excel in all aspects of the Course. Her proposed Leeds Foyer design used a challenging irregularly shaped site incorporating an existing building and the arches below a railway viaduct. She ingeniously integrated the diverse elements to create a design which would give the inhabitants maximum available sunshine in a private oasis protected from the surrounding urban confusion. The scheme is characterized by clear articulation of its component parts. If built, its clarity, vibrancy, dynamism, and spatial interest would probably delight its intended users and contribute very positively towards the regeneration of the area.
