Dreamland: Samson Part 2 Project 2020 Jacques Doody Cardiff University | UK Dreamland’ is a self-sustaining theme park on an isolated atoll on the Isles of Scilly, where the changing climate is already threatening the heart of a wholly marine community. The project has an inherent manifesto in battling the environmental effects of climate change on all fronts through education presented as a sense of considered playfulness and delight, but also the psychological effect it has, combatting the rise of ‘climate anxiety’ - which is holistically treated through a convalescent retreat, supporting the programme of site-specific sustainable narratives. By harnessing the power of play and imagination, the park offers visitors the chance to experience solutions to environmental problems in a completely accessible way, while also supporting the Scillonian economy and sufferers of climate anxiety. The scheme is designed to be a closed loop, circular economic system that allows regeneration of human, environmental and contextual health, whilst also maintaining and celebrating the value of all resources in an otherwise inhospitable locality. Architecture, within a threatened context, is used throughout Dreamland to educate and ultimately prompt a response to do better in the face of the environmental crisis.
