Architecture to spark in the dark Part 2 Project 2003 Chan Fung Yin Catty University of Hong Kong | China Light is too abstract without darkness. When light comes in, darkness fades out. By then we know what light looks like. Architecture is abstract too. Same as light, its meaning is not revealed by its presence. We need darkness so as to make the meaningful visible. The stage of my project is a shabby area of the city: the congestive tenement buildings along the back street. How can architecture spark in the dark? My design is: insertion of tubes- transform and infill new architecture into existing tenement buildings. To cope with the design, two other strategies are used: 1) linking bridges-provide new circulation at different levels above ground at the back street; 2) anchor on ground- access point from front street to back street and then to the tubes.
