Bridge Park and Market Brewery Part 1 Project 2004 Andrew DochertySamuel Carew Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL) | UK Historically London Bridge has been the gateway to the capital. My scheme proposes a park supported from and running the length of London Bridge. The park will create a new pedestrian route into the city and reconnect the surrounding area and its existing transport network with the river. On the southerly end of the park a brewery and market will form a sheltered meeting space for commuters, tourists and local residents. The market-brewery is composed of an array of naturally ventilated structural ceramic towers and light wells. The brewery will brew beer flavoured from hops grown on the park. Andrew’s scheme is a mature, thoughtful and creatively inspired response to a complex brief. Both quirky and considered, it regularly crosses the line between fun and functional. The work is thoroughly researched both historically and contextually, and in its considered use of new materials. Andrew produced a series of full scale samples of the ceramic panels that form the brewery’s towers in order to achieve the required structural integrity and desired finish. This consistent, rigorous commitment to detail, and the ability to think beyond architectural conventions has made it a delight to be associated with the project this year.
