Aberdeen Fishmarket Part 2 Project 2010 Rick Burney Robert Gordon University | UK A market for the city | A city for a market Located within the periphery of an island of urbanism, identified in Aberdeen, a market and complementary amenities are proposed to occupy a prominent pocket of land. This proposition marks the return of a lost institution, which would radically transform the life of the area. The inherently seasonal market would provide a new place for the trade of regional produce, where local farmers, fishermen, distillers and food producers could exhibit what the North East has to offer.Based on acute observations, the architectural intention is to provide an intense and abstract representation of the character of the area, conceived as a little city within the boundaries of the site. Grounded in its context, it is hoped the proposition would be both useful and beneficial to the area. Rick Burney Rick Burney was a key figure in our Unit which explored the peripheral territories of Aberdeen docklands. An area of the marginal and the untidy that is currently being swept aside by the corporate and the banal. Rick quietly approached both the research and proposition stages with a focus and accuracy that merited this nomination. His proposals for a local market were considered, resolved and intelligent. He moved beyond the simple notion of slow fresh food to explore the cultural significance of the market as an institution in the city.Neil Gillespie Tutor(s) Professor Neil Gillespie
