Extension to Bluecoat Arts Centre

Part 0 Project 2005

The project considers the restoration and extension of the spaces and programs at the Bluecoat Centre and Art Gallery, designing and integrating a new wing to a Grade I listed building and dense surrounding urban streetscape, aiming to create an open and accesible promenade within and a reinforced urban route through the building and surrounding public spaces. The project allowed me to look at the progremmatic issues concerning the creation of spaces that may act as a platform for exchange and collaboration between users within a limited urban site.

Kristin’s proposal for the extension of the Bluecoat Centre consists of a sealed box that separates radically the original building from the new projects that are currently being built around it, such the BBC headquarters under construction next door. Thus, the proposed building acts as a barrier to protect the privacy and tranquillity of the existing interior garden while, at the same time, repels discordant and unsympathetic new developments. More importantly, Kristin’s building improves the architectural value of the Bluecoat by crating a new contemporary image at the rear that does not diminish the original Grade 1 listed building.
