The Social Tradition

Numerous trades and communities of Plymouth’s past have been lost since wide spread gentrification, moving industrial businesses to the outer perimeter of the city, the ‘Social Tradition’ has the aim to reengage local communities with ceramic production. Dartmoor mineral deposits allowed Plymouth to be one of the first UK locations producing bone china until production left Plymouth in the late 18th century. Whilst ceramics are linked to Plymouth, ceramic vessels are used daily in communities worldwide; for pottery can be both decorative and functional. Ceramics can both express and communicate, ‘The Social Tradition’ aims to bind ethnic communities together, creating safe spaces for persecuted women communicate safely.

Communication between ethnic groups is vital and many face language barriers, this can leave females on spousal visa’s, many of which do not work isolated and confined to their own. By utilising clay as a communicator ‘The Social Tradition’ aims to be inclusive and safe for vulnerable women to congregate.

Increased conversation between community members will allow each person to have their story understood, breaking down stereotypes and taboos, allowing the communities of Plymouth to unite and form a new legacy.
