Arts & Crafts Revival: In Conversation with the Ancestors Part 2 Project 2021 Alice Langstaff Northumbria University Newcastle | UK The rich culture and heritage enjoyed by Newcastle-Upon-Tyne is sadly becoming increasingly vulnerable. By embracing the technology and globalisation of modern society, connections to the past are being rapidly eroded and losing prominence.To this end, the idea of a second ‘Art & Crafts’ movement becomes appealing. The original movement retaliated against threats to culture and vernacular, seeking knowledge from the past to protect and inform the future. An ideology has been developed responding to the original Arts & Crafts principles but reinvented for a 21st century audience, transcending the scales of this ‘handcrafted’ project from programme to communication methods.A ‘Revival Exhibition’ masterplanned at the heart of historic Newcastle seeks to revive the city’s culture and social history, and forgotten medieval route from Castle to Quayside. All nine segments of culture are represented along the vibrant journey, with ‘performance’ celebrated at every opportunity. Ultimately, the ambition is for the ‘Arts & Crafts Revival’ to spread across the UK, with exhibitions promoting local culture in all cities.A specific site within the masterplan - representing the ‘Values’ and ‘Food & Drink’ cultural segments - is further developed, centred around creative restoration of the flagship Cooperage building and adjacent historic fabric.
