Barrio Dracones Casa Particular Part 2 Project 2020 Sarah-Jayne Stamper Manchester School of Architecture Manchester | UK Memories are intangible, often forgotten, lost or distorted over time. This thesis employs the methodology of model making to transform the abstract into the tangible by firstly analysing the house as a mnemonic device that records and transmits part of our history as human beings, specifically childhood memories. The lens then zooms out from the microcosm of a house to the macrocosm of a city by looking at the notion of collective existence within the context of Havana, Cuba. This Thesis delves into the school of phenomenology drawing on the theories of Proust, Bachelard and Pallasmaa to understand the emotive experience our environments project on us. Memories are not meant to be locked away, but are designed to be expressed, shared and re-lived. Consequently, I have designed ‘Barrio Dracones Casa Particular’ to embody and facilitate the sharing of memories. Is an opportunity to celebrate private and collective memory, cultural differences and realities experienced by people in Cuba and across the world symbolising international collaboration and a collective understanding of what it is to be human. The site is a melting pot of reminiscence, designed to enrich its guests’ experience, challenge their perceptions and create new memories in the process. Sarah-Jayne Stamper Tutor(s)
