American Gothic

Part 2 Project 2019

The project research begins with the Gothic edifices and the “Style’s” beginning, along with its political history, and subsequent evolution. Its early work explores many different strands of research all tied to some part of the Gothic period and translated to present day, whether it be structural, geometric, or symbolic.

Through open ended research and testing, new typologies were created, along with experimentation into structure afforded by new construction techniques available.

The project elapsed such that the typology of building chosen was an Embassy. Its nationality – America, and its hosts – Saudi Arabia being the two actors the research led to be cast. The relationship of the two countries is shown through symbolic Gothic forms as the trade between both requires no introduction, in tandem with new structural and visual explorations.

“The cathedral, as we shall see, was designed as an image, and was meant to be understood as one.”
Otto von Simson – The Gothic Cathedral: Origins of Gothic Architecture and the medieval concept of order.
