Eldercare Village: A Communal and Supportive Living Space Part 1 Project 2024 Long Hei Mak University of Lincoln Lincoln | UK The new regional headquarters for Age UK in Horncastle, UK, addresses the profound fears of loneliness and death that often accompany aging. The design challenges the notion that moving into an eldercare facility means the end of one’s life. Instead, this project aims to offer seniors a vibrant, renewed sense of purpose and the opportunity to rediscover themselves through meaningful connections.At the heart of the design is the Linear Atrium concept, which brings the energy and vibrancy of urban streets indoors. This promotes social interaction and fosters a strong sense of community. Large roof lights and expansive glass walls ensure that natural light floods the building, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that enhances residents' well-being and helps combat feelings of isolation.The architecture blends contemporary aesthetics with local traditions, using warm materials and incorporating natural elements to create a serene and rejuvenating environment. This inclusive space caters to the needs of the over-50s retirement community, local residents, and Age UK staff, encouraging dynamic and vibrant interactions.This project not only sets a new standard for eldercare architecture but also transforms the perception of eldercare facilities, offering a nurturing, engaging, and sustainable living environment that fosters a renewed sense of purpose and community for its residents.
