Through the Mist Part 1 Project 2024 Paola Moro Ravensbourne University London | UK Through the Mist proposes the rehabilitation of Rotherhithe’s gas holder and its contaminated landscape into a horticulture centre and public park. The program addresses the lack of local food amenities in the area whilst promoting a new local food supply chain. Centred around the theme of water, the project celebrates the history of the Docklands and provides sustainable water sourcing and conservation. The landscape expands the public realm along with repurposing the existing underground tank to store and filter rainwater which is later used in the façade and hydroponic towers. Inside the building, natural light glimmers through the distinctive water pipes façade, creating an ephemeral interior environment that embodies the community’s tight relationship with water, whilst also being a calming and comfortable space to work in. Hydroponic growing stations challenge the typical farming arrangement by proposing a track system fit for places with light and spatial constraints found in urban settings. A future consideration is explored through flood resilience, as the building floats with changes in the tank’s water level. Caring to provide excellent public space for the community and future-facing food production, the project shows how gasholders’ peculiar structures are not burdens, but instead make great advantages.
