The thesis considers Edinburgh’s extensive literary importance, following the processes and themes of some of its key authors and poets to engage young people suffering from mental health issues and young deaf people through narrative, connecting them to the city’s past, stories and heritage. The identified groups have repeatedly been alienated by the Edinburgh’s wider culture, even though the city itself has historically provided key stepping stones e.g. the first Deaf School in the UK. Therefore the proposals aim to provide the Deaf community, who are battling to be heard, with a platform and education for others to understand them, as well as writing retreats for young people suffering from loneliness, anxiety and depression shaped by negative effects of social media. The protagonist groups conclude two complementary strands of literature: psychological qualities and expression of stories.

The programme and designs involve a play between introverted and extroverted spaces, weaving memory, perception, imagination and duality through the understanding of the city. The writing community create and compose their own stories, escaping reality in the process, while the deaf community physically express them in their own language, finally being heard and understood by those being educated in their culture.
