Spindle Community

Part 1 Project 2024

In the rapid urbanisation of the modern world, there creates an untold demand for residential growth, prioritising quantity over quality. Spindle community defines a group of people wanting to make a change in the way we approach expansion. They prioritise longevity, craftsmanship and legacy in their works.

As part of a radical housing scheme, the site aims to provide a comfortable space in which the community of wood workers can live together, sharing facilities, retaining sustainable practices, and being able to provide to the wider community of Tamworth.

The schemes main objectives are to improve the quality of the landscape, by celebrating nature, improve routes and links through Tamworth, and to celebrate the passion of craftsmanship the residents have.

The Spindle community consists of multi-generational families and therefore the housing needs to accommodate for a range of needs, such as childcare facilities, disability access, gyms, games rooms and private relaxation spaces.

Whilst the community expands over time through employment and family growth, there may be a demand for living expansion, so the scheme aims to achieve an expandable building which can be manipulated over time.
