Living Alone Together Part 1 Project 2024 Sze Chai Hau University of Hong Kong | China "Alone but not lonely, together but not confined."In response to the ongoing trend of privatizing living spaces in high-rise buildings and the Cambodian lifestyle of communal outdoor living, "Living Alone Together" aims to foster gathering opportunities for individuals within a shared environment while still allowing for personal space. The design features gathering spots called nodes and connecting pathways known as strips. The project identifies the forgotten and less-than-ideal spots of the city, then designs nodes in these areas to enhance the quality of life for both the existing ground-living Khmer population and new residents. Then, the overall gestures of the living units are arranged according to their relationship with the ground and connectivity within the nodes of the new living complex.Different living units are designed to balance individual privacy with community living, with separate floors for personal space and a shared middle floor for socializing. The in-between level allows residents to choose their level of interaction, fostering a lively community with diverse lifestyles. While celebrating individuality is important, "Living Alone Together" champions the timeless essence of togetherness in traditional living, harmoniously blending both to craft a dynamic and inclusive lifestyle.
