Little Eden Part 1 Project 2020 Emily SuarezJuan Guareschi University of Miami | USA Through our understanding of ‘tent cities’ that were stablished on the site, and pre- industrial history of the neighbourhood, our intention for the project is to re-discover the identity of Little River through the concept of a ‘tent’. We took aspects of the tent into interpretation in terms of modularity, lightness of the structural elements and the sense of community. Thus, we kept the existing house that is on the site and frame the existing trees with two bar buildings in order to create a courtyard that would bring light, privacy and ventilation to the inhabitants. The building is raised on a plinth to protect the structure from sea-level rise, as well as stablishing a hierarchy in response to future zoning conditions. A modular grid structure is used to weave the programs, maintaining its generic rigidity in the apartments and stretching in the Ground floor and terrace to distinguish the public and the private. Furthermore, the project strives for a social and ecological resiliency. The open circulation and staircases are meant to awake social activities as they interact with the courtyard, and the existing house becomes a pre-school.
