This essay looks at the writings of German expressionist Paul Scheerbart (1863-1915), specifically his manifesto Glasarchitektur, published in 1914, which envisions a utopian future of coloured glass architecture. The essay considers the influence of this seminal text on Scheerbart’s contemporaries and traces the survival of his visionary ideas throughout twentieth-century architecture and up to the present.
