From HMO to PBSA: A Study Into the Growth of Purpose Built Student Accommodation in Newcastle Upon Tyne

Addressing a gap in current research, the paper explores the nationwide phenomena of purpose built student accommodation (PBSA) growth within UK higher education. Using the popular university city of Newcastle Upon Tyne as a microcosmic case study, the research cross references existing literature with primary interview data collected from current and recently graduated students to base its conclusions. Refining the complex issue, the discussion is distilled into what are judged to be the three most influential factors in Newcastle’s PBSA growth: local planning policy, the growth of international students and student experiences within the private rental sector (PRS). The research offers insight into this underexplored topic and acts as a starting point for further studies into the changing nature of student living trends.
