How Equal Is Our City?

Part 2 Dissertation 2021
Lester Chung
University of Hong Kong | China
In Hong Kong, all buildings are deemed to satisfy the guidelines as listed in the Barrier Free Access Design Manual in order to eliminate discriminations against persons with disabilities or mobility impairments.

Ramps are provided as an alternate option to stairs, yet, they are often under-estimated and under-designed. Inconsiderate designs can cause unnecessary hurdles and frustrations for persons with disabilities to approach a building and explore their cities.

This dissertation reviews the position of architects through the peculiar lens of existing impractical, unfriendly and prohibited ramps found across the city of Hong Kong.

Can ramps provide more than just a physical link between two levels? By re-thinking accessibility and re-imagining navigation, 'How Equal is Our City ?' questions and challenges the current architectural practices and provides insights to build a more accessible, inclusive, and better environment for all.
