A Study on University Students' Demands and Spatial Requirements in Regards to Public Transit Service in ‘Homagama’

The dissertation aims to present and analyse demands and spatial requirements of University students of ‘Homagama’ city in Sri Lanka, towards the public transit service in the area. The goal of this study is to identify the spatial requirements, spatial qualities, University student’s travel lifestyle and demands in creating built environments for public transit service with the integration of activities that cater to the needs of younger generation of the society in order to create an opportunity to increase the use of public transit service.

‘Homagama’ is a suburban area located in the Western part of the island Sri Lanka which belongs to Colombo district of Western province. Under the Urban Development Authority (UDA) development plan (2019-2030) ‘Homagama’ city was declared to be developed as a tech corridor and with the rapid development that has been happening for last few years, Education field was also developed within the region in significant manner. Consequent to this it attracts a considerable number of students to the region as well. In order to support this, better facilitated public transportation system is needed which can fulfil the uprising demand.

The study consists of Primary information, which were accumulated with an online survey conducted by author, involving University students of Selected 4 Universities to identify their travel lifestyle, spatial requirements and demands towards public transit service. Through this study, it intends to create a preferable solution to adapt into the current energy crisis in the country, facing the challenges to look for a passive way forward.
