Saving the Fading Memories, Old Tripoli Cultural Park Part 2 Dissertation 2024 Salam El Jamal Beirut Arab University - Tripoli campus | Lebanon As Deep in our minds, memories flash like old movie reels. They hold bits of laughter, whispered secrets, and pivotal moments that shaped us. However, it is inevitable that memories dance with time, gradually fading into the soft embrace of oblivion. Saving the old Lebanese fading memories is what we need especially within a city of history as Tripoli that located on the north Lebanese coast, ruled by many great civilizations and empires, “Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Crusaders, Mamelukes….”. This made it full of history and shaped its identity. The city that famous with its lively souks, historic mosques, and waterfront, perfectly embodies the story of the cultural mix and resilience of its people. Unfortunately, city identity is threatened with extinction due to lack of interest and it sites are being abandoned. This led to the concept itself where the research aims to establish adaptive reuse design decision approaches to improve urban liveability through the redevelopment of abandoned cultural heritage sites, an application on El Nejmeh square. The main objective of the dissertation is to implement architecture of cultural significance in new buildings located in neglected historical places left vacant and underutilized and transform them into valuable assets.
