We all recognise the feeling you get when entering a building that holds personal significance, however, locating the exact cause is more difficult. Which part is speaking to us, and how?

‘Derelict Monuments and Nostalgia for a Lost Kingdom’ explores how spaces can create that familiar feeling, not with a polished final product, but through the artist's methods and history weaving its way into a tapestry of people and place. This dissertation compares the adaptive and personal process of Architect Ricardo Bofill when working on his home and studio ‘La Fábrica’, with that of animator Hayao Miyazaki, and his relationship to his first feature under Studio Ghibli ‘Castle in the Sky’.

Through investigating the personal histories of the artists, the subject matter in their physical context, and the volumes and textures of the space, this text uncovers how tangible spaces are created. Critical analysis with ideas from Johan Huizinga, Peter Zumthor as well as the two artists themselves are used so that we can identify the source of the success of these examples. These findings can be used to inform our design process as architects to create spaces that reflect the people that inhabit them.
