Green Dreams and Industrial Majesty: An Illustrated Case Study of Battersea Park and Battersea Power Station Part 2 Dissertation 2024 Faith Ogundare University of East London London | UK This dissertation explores the contrasting London sites of Battersea Park and Battersea Power Station. Although they are neighbours, they are fundamentally different in their design, management and legacy.The dissertation includes a review of the sites in the context of people, climate, hard materials and green infrastructure. The people chapter uses on-site surveying of how people use the site, utilising techniques put forward by Jan Gehl & Brigitte Svarre (2013) such as mapping, tracing and tracking.The dissertation compares the differences between the historical design approach of Battersea Park and the contemporary design approach of Battersea Power Station, and considers how management is influencing materials choices and people’s use of the spaces. The key difference between the sites is public vs private management, which affects both hard and soft material choices, as well as how safe or comfortable people feel using the space.There are many lessons to be learnt from these diverse case studies, both in respect of buildings and urban space.
