Developing a Comprehensive Framework for Assessing Elder-Friendly Accessibility in Mid-Rise Residential Buildings in Colombo Part 2 Dissertation 2024 Nesura Bulathsinghala Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) | Sri Lanka This research dissertation addresses the lack of elder-friendly specifications in mid-rise residential buildings in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where nearly a quarter of the population will soon be over 60 (UN Population Statistics). With the over-65 demographic projected to rise from 9% in 2019 to 18% by 2050, there is an urgent need for age-friendly environments. The study proposes a comprehensive framework to assess elder-friendly accessibility (EFA) based on 110 design specifications across 21 key components. The methodology involves three phases: a qualitative systematic review to identify key design principles like safety, support, cognition, and well-being; formulation of the assessment framework by reviewing international and local standards and localizing through expert consultation; and validation of the framework through experts’ opinion survey and in-depth case studies. The outcome is a practical assessment framework for evaluating EFA, promoting inclusive living environments, addressing urban infrastructure deficiencies, and providing guidelines for future development. Additionally, it is easily adaptable to different countries and building categories, addressing the need for elder-friendly environments globally. The proposed framework not only assesses existing case studies but also serves as a design tool for creating inclusive environments for older adults, fostering age-friendly urban development.
