The Shape of Light

Few elements in architecture evoke mood and sensation as powerfully as light. Reflecting on his Beaux-Arts training, Kahn recalled “an unquestionable feeling of the inseparability of light and building, and the fact that we could construct light.” Yet this latter idea (the architect’s capacity to construct light) is too often overlooked. Openings may be meticulously designed to frame views and regulate illumination, but the spatial form of light itself is rarely a primary concern.

This project re-centres that concern by exploring the 'shape of light' (its movement, presence, and spatial quality) through a novel framework that treats light as a tangible, three-dimensional entity. The work has two key aims: first, to develop an experimental methodology for visualising the intangible qualities of light in both space and time; second, to critically examine these visualisations to better understand how light influences spatial and experiential outcomes.

By treating light with the same spatial rigour as volume, the project invites a deeper reflection on how we design with light. Not just to illuminate, but to shape architectural experience itself.
