Small Farm on Pustara - Mala Farma Na Pustari Part 2 Dissertation 2025 Kristina Petrović University of Belgrade | Serbia The salaš represents a significant rural phenomenon in northern Serbia, particularly in the region of Vojvodina, and serves as the central focus of this master thesis. The research investigates the typology, historical development, and cultural significance of salaši, with particular emphasis on the Subotica area. By mapping active and inactive farmsteads, the thesis identifies a considerable number of abandoned units with strong potential for revitalisation. The aim of the thesis is to present, through an interdisciplinary approach, how these spaces can be reactivated by restoring their connection to nature, agriculture, and rural life. The theoretical framework explores the symbiotic relation- ship between salaši, rural culture, and the natural environment, offering a broader understanding of their philosophy, function, and historical transformation. A site in southern Subotica is used as a case study to examine possible forms of intervention. The area includes several inactive farmsteads, which serve as a basis for analysing strategies of renewal, integration, and adaptive reuse. The thesis seeks to highlight the value of salaši not only as symbols of rural heritage, but also as potential models for sustainable, contemporary living rooted in tradition, landscape, and cultural identity.
