Casting Identities: Art as a medium for storytelling and cultural preservation, a case study of Kosovo refugees

After the catastrophic conditions their country was left in, many Kosovars had to go through difficult journeys in order to protect themselves and their families and start a new life after the conflict. What stands out in their experiences was the great welcome and generosity that was shown by boarder countries, particularly Albania, which has led to a strong relationship that would last for years to come.

The stories of these individuals are as great of importance and so they should be preserved for generations to honour and learn from. For this reason, art can serve as a tool to bring these narratives into light and provide the recognition they deserve but to also give refugees a memory that can identify their individual journeys and celebrate resilience.

The conclusion of this research is an artefact that was inspired by shared traditions, integration and cultural preservation, but also shared and collective stories that deserve to be recorded, talked about and admired. This artefact will serve as an example of social and cultural care that others can learn from.
